What is ear surgery?
Ear Refinement surgery, otherwise known as Otoplasty, is plastic surgery performed to improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear.
How will I feel following ear surgery?
Discomfort immediately following ear surgery is normal and can be controlled with pain medication. There may be an itchy feeling under bandages for 1 to 2 weeks during the healing process.
When can I return to normal activities?
As long as your ears are protected, you can return to normal activities the day following your surgery.
At what age can ear surgery be performed?
Most ear refinement surgeries are performed on children. Otoplasty can be performed on children as early as age 5, when a child's ear cartilage is stable enough for correction.
Will anesthesia be used?
General anesthesia is used for this procedure, performed by a doctor anesthesiologist.
Will there be visible scars?
Dr. Atagi tries to keep all scars hidden within the natural ear contours. If there needs to be a scar that is not in a well-hidden area, we can provide additional information about scar care once the incision is completely closed.
Are their any risks of hearing loss due to Otoplasty?
No. Hearing loss is not a risk. Risks include redness on or around the ear, bleeding, swelling and infection. At Atagi Plastic Surgery and Skin Aesthetics, we watch our patients closely to help avoid any of these risks.
Will my insurance cover this procedure?
No, all major insurance companies feel that Otoplasty is an aesthetic procedure and will therefore not cover any associated costs.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure itself takes 1.5- 2 hours. However, the facility asks that you check in 1.5- 2 hours prior to your scheduled surgery. After surgery, we will keep you in recovery for a minimum of an hour to make sure your vitals are where they need to be, prior to sending you home.
