In the Know: The Lipstick Index
The New York Times recently referred to the Lipstick Index as "that frivolous financial barometer that says cosmetics sales rise in direct relation to free-falling finances." Historically, when the economy goes south, cosmetics sales go up. And in fact, they've gone up 40 percent in the last few months.
Apparently, when women cut back spending, they still like an occasional little treat—lipstick. According to the Times article, traditional, more subtle shades are in.
