Chin Augmentation by Dr. Atagi Enhances Facial Balance

February 4, 2013 by Atagi Plastic Surgery & Skin Aesthetics

Did you know that the chin augmentation is one of the fastest growing facial procedures?  What’s more, unlike most other cosmetic surgery, men and women are choosing chin augmentation in almost equal numbers.

“A strong jaw is something that men recognize as a masculine feature, and augmenting the chin further strengthens the jawline.” said Dr. Atagi.  “For women, a small underdeveloped or receding chin results in facial imbalance.”  A man seeks to bring attention to the chin with augmentation.  For a woman, the goal of chin enhancement is to improve facial proportion as opposed to drawing attention to the chin.  Rebalancing the face will make the eyes pop and sparkle, lean out pudgy cheeks, refine the nose and enhance the facial silhouette.

The specifics of chin augmentation vary, as the procedure is always tailored to the individual needs of the patient.  Dr. Atagi and other cosmetic surgeons begin by conducting a thorough evaluation of the client’s face and medical history.  An in-depth conversation is also required to determine the patient’s goals.

The two most popular methods of chin augmentation are:

Chin implant: A small incision is made in the natural crease under the chin/jaw followed by creation of a pocket for the implant between the skin and bone of the chin.  Dr. Atagi then inserts and evaluates sizers the exact contour and dimensions of different implants.  This allows her to select the best-fit implant for the patient. The implant adds volume and definition.  Recovery time is minimal.  “Some patients are out and about at the mall the next day,” said Dr. Atagi.  “We do ask patients to minimize strenuous activities for a couple of weeks.”

Injectable fillers: Injectable facial fillers, such as Belotero®, Juvéderm® and Radiesse® can be used to temporarily enhance the chin.  The fillers can be injected in-office, and the effect is immediate. “If you’re interested in a chin augmentation, but not ready to sign up for a surgical procedure, an injectable is something that can be done at any time.  It’s a nice way to ‘try out’ chin augmentation,” Dr. Atagi says. The up-front cost for fillers is less than a chin augmentation with an implant – but if you want permanent enhancement, a chin implant is less expensive over the long run.
