You’ve heard about makeover miracles and surgeries gone wrong. While it’s helpful to ask around for an esteemed plastic surgeon there are reliable means recommended by the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons. In fact, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) launched a public safety campaign at their annual meeting, Plastic Surgery 2011 here in Denver. The ASPS is “taking action to warn patients to investigate their doctor’s qualifications before undergoing plastic surgery procedures. There is a misconception among consumers that as long as a doctor is certified in a medical field that her or she is qualified to practice plastic surgery. This is absolutely wrong and it is dangerous for patients.” (plasticsurgery.org)
Do your research. Make sure your plastic surgeon:
- Is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery
- Operates in Accredited facilities
- Has performed a minimum of 3 years of plastic surgery
- Has performed a multitude of the operation you seek
- Shares before and after photos of their actual patients
- Listens carefully to your unique needs
After asking around and getting the skinny from your friends on a few plastic surgeons, take the time to do your research. Do not fall prey to “White Coat Deception”. Search the internet or call and politely ask their receptionist, is your doctor board-certified, specifically, by The American Board of Plastic Surgery? If the answer is “yes,” only then schedule a consultation to get some face time with the doctor.
