Redefining Your Natural Beauty: Breast Implant Removal with a Lift

There comes a moment when decisions once made no longer feel aligned with who you are today. The thought of removing your implants, however, often comes with concerns about sagging skin or a deflated appearance. Breast implant removal combined with a lift can help restore a natural, youthful contour.

What Is Breast Implant Removal with a Lift?

This dual procedure involves the removal of breast implants (known as explant surgery) followed by a breast lift (mastopexy). Explant surgery removes the implants and, if necessary, the surrounding scar tissue or capsule. The breast lift then reshapes and repositions the breast tissue, removes excess skin, and elevates the nipples to create a firmer, perkier appearance.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 36,000 breast implant removal surgeries were performed in 2020, reflecting a growing trend toward explantation. Many women choose to combine this with a lift to avoid sagging and achieve a harmonious shape post-removal.

Breast Lift Incision Options

The type of incision used during a breast lift depends on your unique anatomy and goals. Common incision options include:

  • Periareolar Incision: Made around the edge of the areola, this option is typically used for women with minimal sagging.
  • Lollipop Incision: A combination of a periareolar incision and a vertical incision down to the breast crease, suitable for moderate sagging.
  • Anchor Incision: Includes the lollipop incision along with an additional horizontal incision along the breast crease, ideal for significant sagging or reshaping needs.

Dr. Atagi will recommend the best incision based on your breast size, degree of sagging, and desired outcome.

Who Is a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for breast implant removal with a lift if:

  • You no longer desire breast implants due to personal preference, complications, or health concerns.
  • You are experiencing sagging skin or loss of elasticity after having implants.
  • You are in good overall health and maintain a stable weight.
  • You seek a natural, youthful appearance.

Preparing for Surgery

Proper preparation is essential for a successful procedure and smooth recovery. Here are some steps to take:

  • Consult a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon: Ensure your surgeon is board-certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and experienced in breast reduction procedures.
  • Quit Smoking: Smoking impairs healing and increases the risk of complications. It’s best to stop at least three months before surgery.
  • Avoid Certain Medications: Steer clear of aspirin, ibuprofen, or any blood-thinning medications starting two- weeks before surgery.
  • Plan Your Recovery: Arrange for help at home during the initial few days.  You will have restricted activities for the first two weeks, to avoid raising your blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Proper Nutrition: Pre-plan meals for your recovery period that are high in protein and low in sodium.
  • Prepare Emotionally: Some women feel an emotional adjustment after removing their implants. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family.

Recovery: What to Expect

Recovery from breast implant removal with a lift typically takes several weeks, but the timeline varies for each individual. Here’s what you can anticipate:

  • Initial Healing: Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common in the first week. You will wear a support bra, 24 hours a day for the first 7-10 days.  The bra will help support the healing tissues.
  • Restricted Activities: Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for at least four to six weeks. Gentle walking is encouraged to promote circulation.
  • Scars: While scars are inevitable, they are usually placed in discreet locations and fade over time with proper care. Silicone scar sheets or creams may help minimize their appearance.
  • Final Results: It may take several months for the breasts to settle into their new shape. Most women report feeling more comfortable and confident in their natural contours.

Unique Insights About the Procedure

  • Capsulectomy Options: If scar tissue around the implant (capsule) is problematic, a total or partial capsulectomy may be performed. This step is often recommended for women experiencing complications like capsular contracture.
  • Tissue Quality Matters: The elasticity and thickness of your breast tissue can influence the results of a lift. Women with very thin or stretched skin may require additional techniques to achieve optimal results.
