Why It’s Important to Choose a Plastic Surgeon Who is Board Certified

September 25, 2012 by Atagi Plastic Surgery & Skin Aesthetics

Denver’s Dr. Tanya Atagi of Atagi Plastic Surgery and Atagi Skin Aesthetics proudly uses the distinction “board certified plastic surgeon,” and with good reason.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. grants certification only when a doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and has completed at least five years of additional training as a resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This training includes at least five years of residency training in all areas of surgery, with at least two years devoted entirely to plastic surgery. Certification is a voluntary process a surgeon seeks after this training. To become certified, the doctor then must pass comprehensive written and oral exams.  The standards are rigorous, but the distinction ensures a high level of training and experience.

Unfortunately, even the term “Board Certified” can be misleading.  Understand that there are physicians practicing Plastic Surgery who identify themselves as “Board Certified” but fail to mention they are certified in specialties outside of Plastic Surgery.  In fact, there are even made-up specialties.  These are specialties that are not officially sanctioned by the governing Accreditation Council or Royal College.

According to a recent study by RealSelf.com, board certification also translates into great patient satisfaction.  RealSelf.com analyzed tens of thousands of self-reported consumer reviews across hundreds of cosmetic procedures posted to the site. They found that patient satisfaction rates were 15% higher on average among board-certified aesthetic experts.  In addition, for many of the most popular cosmetic procedures, such as liposuction, patients reported 25% higher satisfaction rates when these procedures were performed by board-certified doctors.
