In the quiet of her car, a woman glanced at her reflection in the rearview mirror. The deepening lines around her mouth and the loose skin along her jawline seemed to tell a story of age she didn’t feel inside. She wondered, could there be a way to bring her appearance more in line with her youthful energy? For many men and women who share similar concerns about facial aging, a facelift offers a transformative solution.
What Is a Facelift?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce visible signs of aging on the face and neck. It addresses concerns such as sagging skin, deep folds around the nose and mouth, and jowls. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 230,000 facelifts were performed in the U.S. in 2020, making it one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries for facial rejuvenation.
Unlike many non-surgical treatments, a facelift provides long-lasting results by addressing the underlying structures of the face—not just the skin. The procedure often involves lifting and tightening the facial muscles, repositioning fat deposits, and removing excess skin to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
The Surgical Process
Facelifts are highly customizable procedures, tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient. The surgery typically takes six hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
During the procedure, Dr. Atagi makes incisions around the hairline and behind the ears, carefully concealing them in natural creases. The underlying muscles are tightened, fat is repositioned or removed, and the skin is re-draped for a smoother appearance. In some cases, additional procedures like eyelid surgery, fat transfer or FaceTite may be performed simultaneously to enhance overall results.
Recovery and Healing
Recovery from a facelift varies from person to person, but most patients can expect:
- Swelling and Bruising: These are normal and typically peak within the first few days before gradually subsiding. To help manage these symptoms, we provide a complimentary Sinecch or Arnica Montana, which can aid in reducing bruising and swelling.
- Neck Garment: Wear your neck garment every day for the first week. This will help with swelling and provide support while healing.
- Sleeping: Sleep on your back with your head propped up at a 45 degree angle the first week. This helps minimize swelling.
- Minimizing Scars: You will be provided with silicone gel at your 2-week post-op appointment, promoting a smoother, softer appearance to your incision. It is also important to avoid sun exposure while the incision is healing or pink. If you are in the sun, remember to wear sunblock with UVA and UVB protection.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Regular check-ins are crucial. Expect follow-ups at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1-month post-surgery, with continued monitoring for up to a year.
- Activity: It is important to be up and walking following your surgery to prevent Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) or blood clots. No heavy lifting or activities, that will raise your blood pressure or heart rate for 2 weeks following surgery. After 2 weeks you can gradually resume your usual activities.
At Atagi Plastic Surgery, we include two complimentary lymphatic treatments at 1 week and 2 weeks post-op. These treatments can help reduce swelling, promote faster healing, and improve circulation.
One lesser-known aspect of recovery is the potential for temporary nerve sensitivity or numbness, which typically resolves within a few months as the nerves heal.
Preparing for Surgery
Preparation is key to a smooth facelift experience. Here are some steps to take:
- Schedule a Consultation: Discuss your goals and concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During the consultation, there will be a review of your current and past medical history, to ensure suitability for the procedure.
- Quit Smoking: Smoking impairs healing and increases the risk of complications. It’s best to stop at least three months before surgery.
- Follow Pre-Op Instructions: You will need to stop certain medications, supplements and alcohol, two weeks before surgery.
- Proper Nutrition: Pre-plan meals for your recovery period that are high in protein and low in sodium. You will start with clear liquids initially, then advance your diet to soft food. No tough chewy food for 1 week. Keep your face quiet, minimize your facial movements.
- Plan for Recovery: Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home and help assist you for the first 24 hours after the procedure.
- Make-up and Hair Care: No make-up for 7-10 days after surgery. You cannot get your hair colored, permed or chemically treated for 4 weeks after surgery.
- Skincare Routine: Adopt a physician grade skincare routine leading up to surgery to ensure your skin is in the best possible condition.
