When tired-looking eyes don’t match how you feel inside, an eyelid lift can help you look as vibrant as you are. At Atagi Plastic Surgery & Skin Aesthetics, Dr. Atagi combines surgical precision with an artistic eye to deliver natural-looking results that enhance your unique features.

Why Eyelids Age and What Eyelid Lift Surgery Can Do

The delicate skin around your eyes is some of the thinnest on your body, making it particularly vulnerable to the effects of time, sun exposure, and repeated muscle movement. As we age, this skin loses elasticity and begins to stretch. The muscles that support your eyelids also weaken, allowing fat that naturally cushions your eyes to shift forward and create puffiness. Meanwhile, the eyebrow may descend slightly, adding to the heavy appearance of your upper eyelids.

An eyelid lift, medically known as blepharoplasty, addresses these changes by removing excess skin and repositioning or removing fat deposits. The result is a more alert, refreshed appearance that looks naturally youthful. This procedure can be performed on upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on your specific concerns and aesthetic goals. The key is creating results that enhance your natural eye shape rather than creating an obviously surgical appearance.

Are You a Good Candidate for Eyelid Lift Surgery?

The best candidates for eyelid lift surgery are individuals who are bothered by signs of aging around their eyes but otherwise have realistic expectations and good overall health. Age isn’t the only factor we consider. Some people develop these concerns earlier in life, while others don’t notice significant changes until later.

You might be an excellent candidate if:

What matters most is that you’re in good overall eye health. We require patients to receive clearance from their eye doctor before surgery, and significant dry eye conditions may prevent us from performing this procedure. You should also have realistic expectations about the results and understand that this is a surgical procedure with a recovery period. During your consultation, Dr. Atagi will examine your eye area, discuss your concerns, and help you understand what eyelid lift surgery can and cannot achieve for your specific situation.

What to Expect During Your Eyelid Lift

Consultation

Dr. Atagi examines your eye area and discusses your goals, explaining which techniques will work best for your anatomy and walking you through realistic expectations for your results.

Treatment

Upper eyelid surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia with oral medication for comfort, while lower eyelid surgery, or combined upper and lower eyelid procedures, may require general anesthesia. For upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Atagi makes precise incisions within the natural crease of your eyelid, allowing any scarring to be virtually invisible once healed. Excess skin is carefully removed. The upper eyelid procedure primarily addresses excess skin, since there’s minimal fat in this area, while lower eyelid surgery may also involve repositioning or removing fat deposits as needed. The entire procedure usually takes one to three hours, depending on whether you’re having upper lids, lower lids, or both treated.

Aftercare

Most patients return home the same day with detailed aftercare instructions. We recommend sleeping with the head elevated and cold compresses. Initial swelling and bruising are normal. Swelling takes longer to resolve but is often less noticeable than bruising. Dr. Atagi combines laser treatments with eyelid procedures to decrease bruising, which decreases social downtime. As with nearly all of our surgical procedures, we recommend non-strenuous activities, meaning not elevating the heart rate or blood pressure and no lifting over 10-15 lbs for 2 weeks to minimize bruising and swelling.

Physician-grade skincare products can be transformative in and of themselves by evening skin tone, increasing collagen production, increasing skin turnover, and decreasing pigment production.

Lasers / RF Microneedling / Peels

These impactful surface treatments can give you the hallmark of youthful skin: the fresh polish of smooth, healthy skin.

Volume Restoration

Replacing the youthful “apples in the cheeks” can relieve the tired, sagging, sallow appearance of an aging aesthetic.

Skin Tightening

Increasing the collagen content contributes to a youthful, healthy aesthetic by improving the tone and tightness of the skin.

Expert Care at Atagi Plastic Surgery & Skin Aesthetics

As one of the few female board-certified plastic surgeons in the Denver area, Dr. Tanya Atagi brings both technical expertise and an intuitive understanding of facial aesthetics to every eyelid lift procedure. Her Stanford Medical School education and fellowship training in aesthetics provide the foundation for surgical precision, while her artistic eye ensures results that look naturally refreshed rather than obviously altered. Her approach focuses on preserving your unique eye shape while addressing the specific concerns that brought you to her practice, from incision placement that minimizes visible scarring to fat repositioning techniques that create smooth, natural contours.

Eyelid lift surgery, or blepharoplasty, removes excess skin and/or fat from the upper and lower eyelids to create a more youthful, alert appearance. The procedure works by making precise incisions in natural creases or inside the eyelid, then carefully removing excess or damaged skin and repositioning or removing fat deposits that create puffiness. The result is smoother, more defined eyelid contours that look naturally refreshed rather than surgically altered.

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within a week to ten days after eyelid lift surgery. Most patients are comfortable with 10-14 days of social downtime. You will need to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting, for 2 weeks and follow specific aftercare instructions.

Good candidates for eyelid lift surgery are healthy individuals bothered by droopy upper eyelids or under-eye bags that make them look tired or older than they feel. Age varies widely among candidates; some people develop these concerns earlier in life, while others don't need treatment until later. The most important factors are realistic expectations, good overall health, healthy eyes, and understanding that this is a surgical procedure with a recovery period.

Many patients also add additional therapies to their treatment plan, such as laser resurfacing, AccuTite skin tightening, or Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF).

Insurance typically does not cover eyelid lift surgery when performed for cosmetic reasons, though if your droopy upper eyelids significantly impair your vision, insurance may provide coverage in some cases. We recommend checking with your insurance provider directly to confirm your specific coverage.

The keys to maintaining your results are all the things you can do to keep yourself and your skin healthy: good skincare products, healthy nutrition, adequate sleep, stress reduction, and proper hormone balance.

Yes, eyelid lift surgery can often be combined with other treatments like laser resurfacing, a facelift, AccuTite lower eyelid skin tightening, Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) injections, volume restoration, and fat transfer for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Dr. Atagi will discuss which combinations are appropriate for your goals and anatomy during your consultation.

Like any surgical procedure, eyelid lift surgery carries some risks. Potential risks include temporary swelling and bruising, dry eyes, and temporary blurred vision. Serious complications are uncommon when the procedure is performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Atagi will discuss all risks and benefits during your consultation.

While you’ll notice improvement as swelling subsides in the first 10-14 days, your final eyelid lift results will be apparent after 9-12 months when all healing is complete. Most patients are very pleased with their appearance even during the early healing phase.
