Time changes how we look in the mirror, but it doesn’t have to define how we feel about ourselves. Dr. Tanya Atagi combines board-certified surgical expertise with an understanding of natural beauty to help patients in Lone Tree and Douglas County rediscover their confidence through personalized facelift surgery.

Understanding Facelift Surgery

You’ve noticed changes that skincare and non-surgical treatments can’t address. Perhaps it’s the way your jawline has softened, how your cheeks seem to have settled, or the deepening lines that run from your nose to the corners of your mouth. These changes happen because the deeper structures of your face, including muscles and fat pads, shift and lose volume over time. Gravity, genetics, weight loss, and natural aging all play a role in this process. A facelift works by repositioning these deeper facial structures, removing excess skin, and restoring the natural contours that give your face its youthful definition. The surgery addresses the mid to lower face, including the cheeks, jawline, and neck area. Dr. Atagi’s approach focuses on creating results that look naturally refreshed, never overdone or artificial. The goal is for people to notice that you look rested and vibrant, not that you’ve had surgery.

Who Benefits from Facelift Surgery

The best candidates for facelift surgery are patients who have realistic expectations and are bothered by moderate to significant signs of facial aging. Most patients are between 50 and 70, though individual aging patterns vary significantly. Good skin elasticity helps achieve optimal results, and overall health is important for safe surgery and proper healing.

You might be a good candidate if you’ve noticed:

During your consultation, Dr. Atagi evaluates your facial anatomy, skin quality, and personal goals to determine if a facelift is the right approach for you. Most facelifts are performed together with a necklift for comprehensive results, and some patients also add eyelid surgery. Patients who don’t smoke, or who can stop smoking for at least 90 days before and after surgery, tend to heal better and achieve more predictable results. Dr. Atagi will discuss your medical history and any medications you take to ensure you’re a safe surgical candidate.

Your Results

  1. Expected Change:
A well-performed facelift typically makes you look 7-10 years younger, restoring definition to your jawline, smoothing nasolabial folds, and lifting sagging cheek tissue to a more youthful position.
  2. Recovery Garment:
You’ll wear a compression garment 24/7 for the first week, then only at night during the second week, to support healing and minimize swelling.
  3. Scar Care:
Scars are carefully placed within the hairline and natural creases around the ears, becoming nearly invisible over time. We provide silicone products to help soften and fade scars as they heal.
  4. Longevity:
Many patients find their results last 10-15 years. Non-surgical treatments like laser treatments or dermal fillers, which Dr. Atagi may recommend as part of your long-term care plan, can help maintain your refreshed appearance longer.

What to Expect During Treatment

Consultation

Dr. Atagi examines your facial structure, discusses your concerns, and creates a treatment plan tailored to your anatomy and goals.

Treatment

Performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility, such as Rose Medical Center or Smith Medical Center, most facelift/necklift procedures take 5.5 to 6.5 hours depending on the complexity of your case and treatment plan.

Aftercare

We ask for 2 weeks of non-strenuous activity, which means avoiding elevating your heart rate or blood pressure and not engaging in activities that will cause you to perspire. There is no lifting over 10-15 pounds, as this can elevate your blood pressure. You will wear compression for the face and neck 24/7 for the first week and overnight only for the second week.

Results

Although you will have immediate swelling and fresh incision lines, there is often minimal bruising; the swelling and incision lines are often not particularly noticeable. Your social downtime will likely be the need for your compression garment. Final results are seen 9-12 months postoperatively as the pinkness of your scars and swelling fully resolves, revealing your refreshed, natural-looking appearance.

Most facelift patients are between 50 and 70 years old, but individual aging patterns matter more than chronological age. As with any surgical procedure, any mature patient can be a good surgical candidate with good health and proper clearance as needed. Our mature patients can achieve excellent results with proper health clearance.

Facelift scars are carefully placed within the hairline and natural creases around the ears to minimize visibility. Most scars heal to thin, barely perceptible lines over 6-12 months. We provide our patients with silicone to help minimize scars, and Dr. Atagi's meticulous surgical technique and proper post-operative care help ensure optimal scar healing.

Yes, many patients combine facelift surgery with procedures like necklift, eyelid surgery, fat transfer, and FaceTite, as well as non- or minimally invasive treatments such as skincare, lasers, and volumizing for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Dr. Atagi will discuss which combination of procedures best addresses your concerns while maintaining safe and optimal healing.

Most patients return to desk work within 10-14 days after facelift surgery. You’ll still have some swelling and may need makeup to cover any residual bruising. During the first week, you’ll need to limit turning your head and neck. After 2 weeks, patients can gradually work into normal activities. You will be cleared to increase your heart rate and blood pressure and resume usual lifting activities.

Facelift results typically last 10-15 years; individual results vary based on numerous factors like genetics, nutrition, sleep, stress, inflammation, hormone status, sun exposure, original skin quality, and lifestyle habits. Good skincare, sun protection, a healthy lifestyle, and non-surgical maintenance treatments like daily skincare, facials, volume restoration such as Sculptra, laser treatments, or microneedling can all help to optimize and extend your results.

Facelifts and necklifts reposition and reconstruct the deep foundational anatomical structures and remove excess skin. These surgical changes can be dramatic. At the same time, because aging is multi-factorial, meaning several types of changes are occurring within different layers of the face, optimal results are obtained by treating each of the contributing factors. The surface of the skin (texture, wrinkles, pore size, and color irregularity), volume, and skin laxity should each be addressed with appropriate interventions.

Complementary Facial Procedures

Necklift

Addresses sagging skin and muscle bands in the neck area for a complete lower face and neck rejuvenation. Often combined with facelift surgery for optimal results.

Eyelid Lift

Rejuvenates tired-looking eyes by removing excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. Complements facelift results beautifully.

Fat Transfer to Face

Restores volume using your own fat, a common pairing since facelift addresses skin laxity but not the volume loss that comes with aging.

Dermal Fillers & Sculptra

Restore volume that a facelift alone can't address, complementing your surgical results for a fuller, more complete rejuvenation.
